NAACP: Sterling’s Lifetime Ban Isn’t Enough, Want To Meet With Silver « CBS DC

Before Silver’s announcement, the NAACP’s Los Angeles chapter
withdrew its decision to give Sterling a lifetime achievement award, and
returned money he donated.

Sterling, 80, had been scheduled to receive the honor on May 15 as
part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Los Angeles branch of
the nation’s oldest civil rights organization. He had been chosen to
receive the award because of his long history of donating to minority
charities and giving game tickets to inner city children. The NAACP has
honored Sterling several times in the past.

How The Military Prepares For Climate Change - Business Insider

How The Military Prepares For Climate Change - Business Insider

People working on climate change should prepare for
catastrophic success. I mean, look at how quickly the gay rights
conversation changed in this country. Ten years ago, it was at best a
fringe thing. Nowadays, it’s much, much more accepted. Is that possible
with climate change? I don’t know, but 10 years ago, if you brought up
the possibility we’d have gay marriages in dozens of states in 2014, a
friend might have said “Are you on drugs?” When we get focused, we can
do amazing things. Unfortunately, it’s usually at the last minute,
usually under duress.

The US is an oligarchy, study concludes ~ News Forage

The peer-reviewed study, which will be
taught at these universities in September, says: "The central point that
emerges from our research is that economic elites and organised groups
representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on
US government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average
citizens have little or no independent influence."

Since 1931, the U.S. Supreme Court has found that the First
Amendment prohibits a court order restraining anyone from saying or publishing
something, even if it is defamatory. In Near vs. Minnesota, the U.S. Supreme
Court found that Jay Near, who published a scandal sheet about Minnesota politics,
could not be enjoined by the courts from publishing.

Later cases have upheld the decision, most notably in 1971 when
the New York Times and Washington Post sought to publish the Pentagon Papers, a
secret history and analysis of the Vietnam War compiled for the government.

In short, if you intend to commit libel or slander, you can
be punished or sued after the act, but not stopped from the act itself.

But that's exactly what happened in this instance, White
said.
